Help Me Add Some Advantages to my List

Head of a Woman
Amedeo Modigliani
Today I ventured out with Mark and Avery to do a little shopping. We went to Target and I got settled in my motorized chair and we headed out to do our shopping. Avery proceeded to tell me, "Nana getting to ride in this chair is an advantage of being old!" I laughed out loud and told her we needed to think of some of the ways we have advantages when we grow older. We came up with some together and then I pondered it for a while and have added some of my own.
  • I have slowed down. When I was younger I felt I had to walk fast, eat fast, sleep fast (By slowing down I see more that I must have missed before. I take more time to reflect on what I am actually looking at.
  • I get senior discounts.
  • I don't worry about how I look in a bikini
  • I don't have to shave my legs as much as when I was young (it left my legs and headed for little goofy places on my face)
  • I am better at Trivial Pursuit than a lot of my juniors. (I have lived through a lot of the questions and answers)
  • I am not stressing out about what I will get into for a career. (I can remember times when this was a huge focus of my life)
  • I enjoy being peaceful and quiet (When I was young it seemed like I needed a circus going on to keep me going)
  • I have a grand child. This has changed my life.

Apart from the bikini bit (cos there's no way I'd wear one) I can share many of the things on your list. Excellent things to be thankful for and that are advantages of being older.

Those hairs...... get out the tweezers! I do!

I wouldn't wear a bikini either. I just threw that in cause actually there's just not tons of stuff to list for getting old. Although, I don't believe I would go all through it all again. It's not bad at all being sixty. I just need to be a healthy sixty.

It is NICE that there are SOME positives about growing old. At least, Trish, you have a grandchild...thus far, I only have two granddogs. I am so excited that FINALLY, one of my sons will marry in May and, as they have been together five years, already and want children, a grandchild may be in the picture in a year or so.

I did love your list and can definitely relate to it as 65 crashes upon me next Friday...at least, I will be in Rome for the occasion and four friends are joining me there!

Hopefully we are wiser, more mature, know more than our kids, because to experience it is to really know something.

If you carry your cane you get most young men to rush ahead of you and open the door. Some of those doors are heavy in the wind.

We get served first if we are at a buffet style dinner and have a thoughtful hostess who has taught her children properly.

We make fewer wrong choices than when we were younger.

If we know the Lord, we let him have more control of our lives and fight our battles for us than we did when we were young.

Many restaurants have senior lunch discounts.

We can wear our tennies with a nice pants outfil without anyone giving it a second thought!

I'm more apt to tell people what I think than I used to be. I'm not so bothered by what they think anymore. And I find that a great relief.

I'm with Stevie. I am comfortable standing within myself and can let the chips fall where they may. It's great.

oh, trish, i just love this post!! your fun attitude is contagious! i would have to add to the list: 1) i spend very little time feeling guilty about anything that i do (all the wonderful ways that i waste time) 2) the lack of a competitive nature -- i was quite competitive as a young woman and now really not at all and 3) i get to play mom to my much younger co-workers, many of them even younger than my kids. life is good!!
